I find keeping to a diet is one of the most difficult things for me, I won’t lie. Whenever I try to cut out lots of foods in one hit I have always struggled. Especially when I was living with my mum as I couldn’t control what was in the cupboards. However, now I’m living in my own place it is a lot easier to control what goes into my cupboards, and more importantly, my body. The most common mistake that anyone, not just myself, will make is trying to cut out too much too quickly. I’ve found replacing different items each week when I do the shopping to be a much more suitable method for my mentality towards dieting.

A couple of months back a food shop wouldn’t be complete unless there were crisps in the trolley, now I don’t even walk down the crisp aisle. Sometimes, I can be quite strict to the point I won’t allow certain foods to be in the flat if I know I won’t be able to resist wanting to eat all of it. I can imagine I’m not the only one, but I often go through phases where I’ll feel okay about myself then feel absolutely disgusting. I think I’m going through a phase where I’m feeling pretty good, but I feel like I could feel better. Most of the time, I feel good when I go out in what I’m wearing, but as soon as I see someone that I feel looks so much nicer than me I instantly become so self-conscious.

I need to start getting a little more strict again as I’ve been quite loose with sticking to cutting out crap. Ever since I discovered Tesco Free From chocolate I’m obsessed and it NEEDS to stop! I’m hoping that by putting the basic guidelines that I stick to into a blog post then it will kick me up the bum to get back on track, and also help you guys. I’ve had a couple of people ask how I’d managed to lose the weight I had after my weight loss progress post last week, so I hope this gives you a rough idea!

I aim to drink 2 litres of water a day. That’s 8 average sized glasses a day. Why does that sound so hard? I got into the habit around this time last year to try and lately, I’ve been slipping out of it. I’ve had to redownload the My Water app which reminds me every two hours to have a drink and log it on the app. The benefits to drinking water are incredible; my skin feels and looks better, it detoxes the system and helps your metabolism. I have done a post before about the benefits I’d noticed when drinking water so I won’t go into great detail in this one.

Another thing I stick to is no diary. This isn’t because of wanting to lose weight, but I’d noticed a couple of months ago when I started to drink milk and eat cheese again that my stomach would bloat and begin to hurt a lot whenever I did. Once I realised this I slowly started to cut dairy out of my diet, and although it was quite difficult at first I don’t even think about it anymore. I have noticed dramatic differences since cutting out dairy; I’m a lot less bloated, I’m not getting stomach aches and people have been noticing my stomach looking flatter. Diary is an inflammatory so if you are finding that after eating it you become especially bloated or feel rubbish then maybe try cutting it down too. I am going to be doing a What I Eat In A Day soon which I’m hoping will be helpful to those that are interested.

Something I find difficult is comfort eating. Not because I’m sad, but when I’m bored I instantly want to eat to cure it. To help combat this horrendous habit I’m starting to buy a lot more fruit to replace sugary treats. I’ve also replaced crisps with quinoa chips, but even then I’d like to be able to reach for a banana instead of those too. I find with a lot of the fruit I buy it goes off fairly quick so I eat 20 bits of fruit in 3 days, then nothing for the rest of the week. Also, I try to squeeze in some sort of vegetable with dinner each day if I can.

When I go shopping each week, I make a meal plan so I know what I’m buying. However, lately, I have been sliding away from it where some days I’ll have something different to what I’ve written and then my whole week goes a bit up in the air because I use ingredients I shouldn’t have, or haven’t used ones I should’ve. It does make it so much easier to shop and can get it done quite quickly, but I need to start including lunches again on it as I forget to plan those and then snack during the day instead.

I think I’m going to leave that there for now:

  • Drink more water
  • Dairy free
  • Fruit & vegetables
  • Make a meal plan

I don’t want to be too strict because, as mentioned at the start, it can be difficult to take on too much at one time and end up giving up.
