How many people can honestly say they remember to take their makeup off before bed every single night? It’s okay to admit that it’s easily forgotten about; after a night out, when you fall asleep on the sofa, or when you simply can’t be bothered. It’s said that only a third of women will admit to not taking off their makeup twice a week. But there are plenty more that make this mistake without admitting it. It’s okay, we all do it! However, it can have lasting effects on your skin if it’s made a habit of.

For example, if you didn’t take your makeup off for a month, experts predict that your skin will age by roughly a decade. That’s right, a whole decade in just 30 days. To me, that sounds terrifying. I’m quite happy to grow old gracefully, I would like to hold onto my youth for as long as possible. Of course, I don’t know anyone that forgets for a month straight, but that’s what a recent study has shown.

I often read people’s skincare routine and think “how do you have time to spend half an hour a day on your face?”. Then I really get thinking about how long it probably takes and it’s about 10 minutes without all the tutorials. I spend around triple that time putting my makeup on in the mornings. So it seems fine to me that replenishing my face should take such a small amount of time and energy in comparison. I used to only use a baby wipe to take my make up off!

However, I’ve come to realise that it takes a little more than that to get rid of the daily grime. It’s not just make up that is sitting on my skin by the end of the day. There’s also dirt particles from the air, and oil or grease that my face has produced. Short term effects of not taking your makeup off aren’t so damaging. Long term, if made a habit of, can have substantial effects as mentioned earlier. It can cause your skin to become dehydrated, pores appear larger (possibly even stretch them) and cause the breakdown of collagen and elastin. These are all things that help our skin look youthful and rejuvenated. So by letting our skin become damaged it soon begins to look lifeless and dull.

Your skincare routine doesn’t need to be as extensive as some beauty gurus make out it needs to be. To take off my makeup I use a choice of two products, then to help moisturise and tone I’ll use a range of other products. If I have a face full of makeup, I use the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish cleanser to take off my makeup. It’s so quick and easy, taking no more than a few minutes. It’s extremely gentle on the skin and makes my skin feel so fresh faced and clean.

If I’m having a day where I didn’t fancy full coverage make up, usually consisting of a touch¬†of concealer and a little mascara, I use Simple’s Micellar Water on a cotton pad. Both are amazing for getting any grime on or in your skin and makes it incredibly smooth. Right before I go to bed I use the toner and night moisturiser from TBS’s Tea Tree range. By letting my face be free of makeup and dirt overnight, it gives it a chance to repair itself and do all the clever skin stuff it does that we don’t even realise.

If you’re like me and forget things easily, set a reminder or alarm on your phone for a time you know you’ll be available in the evening. You’ll gradually start tricking yourself into an evening routine where you don’t need an alarm at all. If you know you’re going to be going out, make sure you make a mental note to do it as soon as you get in. If you’re out with your boyfriend get him to remind you when you’re on your way home. It’s something so simple that can be done in the bath or shower that doesn’t take long at all.

Although, sometimes it is the last thing on your mind when you feel extremely tired. It may also be a case of washing it half-bothered, but some grime being left behind will make a difference! To care further for my skin before applying my makeup. I also apply my hydrating moisturiser from Simple just to give my skin a base so that it doesn’t dry. It helps to illuminate my makeup and makes it look a lot dewier.

I hope this post has informed you about why it’s important to take off your makeup before bed! Thanks for reading!
